From: Richard Donkin In response to a few requests, here is the contact information for some useful resources for people with RSI in the UK. The UK does not have a local RSI email list, so apologies to those elsewhere who are not interested in this. Phone numbers are in the post-Phoneday (16th April 1995) format so they are valid before and after that date. (Phoneday is when all UK phone numbers change, mainly by adding the digit '1' before the 'area code', though some cities get new area codes). There are two charities which can help RSI sufferers in choosing voice input or other alternative input systems so they can continue working: The Computability Centre (0800 269545 or 01926 312847) and The Foundation for Communication for the Disabled (01483 727844). Both are impartial with respect to products and have a lot of experience in this area - Computability had an A4 sheet about how they can help RSI sufferers. Also, the UK Government has modified its job accommodation scheme, now called the Access to Work programme which provides up to 21,000 UKP over 5 years for those eligible for registration as disabled (leaflet on registration from your local Job Centre, this may be a hurdle for many RSI sufferers since they can still perform work tasks but in pain). The aim is to help people get a job, keep a job, or make progress in their career. Employers need only contribute if the help brings business benefits. In addition to this provision, the Placement, Assessment and Counselling Teams (PACT) also help disabled people to assess their abilities in order to find work, offer expert advice if someone becomes disabled, and advise employers on recruiting people with disabilities. For more information, arrange an interview with the Disability Employment Adviser, who is a member of the PACT Team, at your local Job Centre. See the phone book under Employment Services. Finally, a network of Access Centres has been established to help disabled people further their education and obtain work. Known as the National Federation of Access Centres, the service is provided at education and further education colleges around the UK. Enquiries about its availability to your local education department or further education college, or to the National Federation, c/o Hereward College of Further Education, Bramston Crescent, Tile Hill Lane, Coventry CV4 9SW, Tel: 01203 461231. All this information came from the RSI Association Newsletter - to join the RSI Association, which has a wealth of useful information about RSI, including details of support groups and efforts to raise awareness of RSI, contact: The RSI Association Chapel House 152-156 High St Yiewsley West Drayton UB7 7BB Tel: 01895 431 134 This phone line is staffed Mon-Fri, 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, answering machine at other times.
